A song with overtones of Recession.......New hope.....Hope deferred....the eventual cycle of life.....

In 2002, we emigrated to England from South Africa. The experience was daunting.

That got me to thinking about my paternal Great Grandparents emigrating to South Africa from Birmingham in 1880.
Ralph & (Sarah) Annie Charlesworth lived at 19 Thorpe St, Birmingham, near the nowadays Hippodrome. They had 8 children ranging from 22 years to 3 years old.
Ralph was a Brass Founder, Annie a Nurse. What caused their emigration, I can't exactly say....my imagination started working...."Annie Dear" was born.
It's a saga.....a dialogue between Husband & Wife.

History tells that unscrupulous "Emigration" Agents were operating at the time in England, plying their trade on the needy & hopeful.
Getting Empire builders was important, so promises were made of fantastic oppourtunities in South Africa.

The song tells the story....

Facts

Annie Dear (Durban Town)  Chris Charlesworth [written 2008 / Recorded 2009]

Annie, dear
What has become
Of my work at the Brass Foundry
The guv’nor tells I’m of need no more
Replaced by the steam machine
Replaced by the steam machine

I have wrestled at night
Fought floods of fear
Dreaded for my near family
How shall we feed our eight babies
And buy coal for the winter cheer
How shall we feed our eight babies
And buy coal for the Christmas cheer
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Now, Ralph, I say,
For to fear no more
I have sought the agent Pearce
He swears there’s warmth and food to boot
Stacked high on South Africa’s shores
My dear
Stacked high on South Africa’s shores

In Birmingham town
There’s a placard red
With promise of a life anew
Our German prince and his plump Queen Vic
Have need of men like you
Our German prince and his plump Queen Vic
Have need of men like you
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Why Annie, I say, I have seen it too
The thrill of adventure lures
There’s lions to kill
And gold to claim
And plunder to be had for sure
My dear
And plunder to be had for sure

Also churches to grow
For our Bishop high
And Christians of the heathen make
Tarry no longer, my sweet lady
Bid England’s shores adieu
Tarry no longer, my sweet lady
Bid England’s shores adieu
------------------------------------------------

On stout ship “John Bright”, from Liverpool Dock
They sailed on that promised day
A trunk of possessions
And eight babies
Aspidistra t’keep the flame

Through wind and hail
And Doldrums sea
They ploughed to the Cape of Storms
Until the ship it’s anchor threw
On D’Urban bank, offshore

-----------------------------------------------

Hands to the brow
They cast their sight
To the shores of D’Urban town
Great heat beat down, naught piles of food
Nor plunder of the human kind
To see
Nor plunder of the human kind

Their dreams were rowed
One mile to shore
But the horses swam instead
The Great White Shark took all, but one
And the sea he boiled blood red
The Great White Shark took all, but one
And the sea he boiled blood red

----------------------------------------------

No paradise
No promised land
Beneath their feet appeared
But snake and thorn and Zulu proud
The Queen’s army cut down
But snake and thorn and Zulu proud
The Queen’s army cut down

----------------------------------------------

Oh Annie, dear, what have we done ?
We’ve bid England’s shores adieu
Enslaved by empire
It’s well-hung prince
To bring wealth to the lordship’s few
Quite so
To bring wealth to the lordship’s few

----------------------------------------------

In stealth, my Love
We will nurture proud
Our babies and their children too
Until such time life’s wheel shall turn
Bid African shores adieu
Until such time life’s wheel shall turn
Bid African shores adieu

This song was inspired by a Carling Black Label advert on UK TV.
Three astronauts arrive at the core of the Universe, wherefrom emits a bright shining light & a booming voice.
One of the Astronauts is wearing unbranded takkies (trainers, sneakers). He is bounced (prevented) from entering glory because of his shoes.

Our society is riddled with unfair judgements......

The song says it all...."The bouncer's my friend, he'll not do you in, if your Jeans are unbranded....."

Facts

Laissez-Faire      Chris Charlesworth (Written 2007 / Recorded 2007)
------------------
How can it be ?
We can't set people free
To be what they're meant to
" I won't like you
  Unless you'll be like me"

Where do we find ?
This warped sense of mind
For tailor-made numbers
You know I got plenty
But you can't know mine

----------------------------------------
You'll get the pin-stripe
The short-back-and-sides
Then you will see judgement's eye
----------------------------------------

How long 'til we know
If the tickets are sold ?
The innocent sunset
They won't let you in
Just because you're here with me

The bouncer's my friend
He'll not do you in
If your jeans are unbranded
There's a calling on you
So please knock as you please

----------------------------------------
You'll get the pin-stripe
The short-back-and-sides
Then you will see judgement's eye

This song was born out of a massive argument Heather & I got into as 30 something's.
It's a reality Love Song.

Thankfully we were able to weather the storm.
All of us beat ourselves up from time-to-time........Nevertheless……

You can always fix what went wrong, with a little humility & forgiveness.

Facts
Nothing Takes That Away
          (by Chris Charlesworth 1992)

No-One would believe me when I said
I give my life in to your hands
I’ll  work all night and day
For you, my Love
Because it’s what I want to do
Many years ago
When we first  knew
Oh I know, Nothing takes that away

The other night we fought and said those words
That linger on like gall
I hope I never broke your heart that you
So freely laid at my door
Many years ago
Before we knew
Oh I know, Nothing takes that away

Lets not get so used to saying
Those words that we know to do
C’mon baby reach out and touch
My heart like you used to do

No-One would believe me when I said
I give my life in to your hands
I’ll  work all night and day
For you, my Love
Because it’s what I want to do
Many years ago
When we first  knew
Oh I know, Nothing takes that away
Oh I know, Nothing takes that away

When we feel as though we have had enough, we can listen for this voice.
It may be voice of a Father, a Mother, a Lover, a Friend....a reassuring voice.

We get too busy to rest & merely listen.

I Am Yours
     (by Chris Charlesworth 1990)

I am Yours
You are mine
And I’ve brought you
to this hour
I have called, you are here
By the way of trial and fire
In the darkest night of travail
You have thought
that I would fail you
Now you know
I’ll not forsake you
I'll not let you down
In these times….

I have loved
I’ve been touched
By the heart-strings
of your confession
I have known
All your ways
Since the day
of your conception
Oh I've have seen
your going’s-out
And I have been
where you have been
I have seen your risings up
And I’ve seen you down
Yes, I’ve seen you down
it makes me weep

To the one
Who overcomes
I am given
The heart for Life
I am smitten
With every smile you bring to me
To the one
Who rejoices in adversity
I have given that
You will rest with me
When all is said and done

I am Yours
You are mine
And I’ve brought you
to this hour
I have looked and I've seen
Your deep, deep down desire
In the darkest night of travail
You have thought
that I would fail you
Now you know
I’ll not forsake you
I'll not let you down
I'll not let you down.......

2010

Many of us get through the year blow-by-blow. Exhausted, we stumble into rest time.
Love has astounding healing properties. Remembering & calling on promises can bring about change....

Facts
You Promised to Be   Chris Charlesworth (2010)

The year's been dry and dusty again
The workman's weary and his hands are stained
He wonders why, "why should I even try"
He's looking for the nearest juniper tree
He's burned out bad and he wants to flee
From the enemy
He's so tired you see

He's spent time oiling parched lips
Meeting every need he can see
But the needs are growing bigger
It's bringing him to his knees

Chorus
You promised to be
A hiding place, A hiding place for me
To you I run, to you I flee
You promised to be
An everlasting sanctury
To you I run, when I'm in need

He walks in the front door, says "Honey I'm Home"
He sits himself down, he's stressed to the bone
He's fading, He's beggining to bleed
He flicks on the screen of that E-PC
The images dance, they promised to be
Everything he wants, everything he can need

The illusions have him captured
But they're not what they're cracked up to be
They promise him the whole world
But it's bringing him to his knees

Chorus

        Sax Break

Chorus

With a ray of light, he's shot in the heart
He realizes that he's being torn apart
Must go for help, must get out of the dark
He gets up and walks and he calls on a friend
He says "Honey, won't you pray, I've reached the end
Of the energy, that has been given to me"

She lays her hands on her husband, and says
"Ooh won't you please ? Send times of refreshing
Won't you bring my man to his knees ? "

Chorus

Most of us have thoughts that need silencing !
In this song, a man talks to his soul and tells it to calm down.
Vain imaginations, past regrets, "I should of..", "If only....", "I wish I hadn't..."

Around Christmas Time and year-end, we try and take a break......
......and then we start to listen to these thoughts that cause the pain.

Hope this song brings calm reflection :-)

Even My Pain
------------
   (by Chris Charlesworth)

You hold the key to every door that's past
Where is the wisdom of this age
In your arms we refuge find
And we say

The well of endless cruciality
Does not run dry before it's time
Take your breath and rest, my soul
This hour

   Chorus
   ------
   This is my heart
   These are my chains
With you all things are possible
   Even my pain

Where is the peace that is beyond all peace
Empires rise and then they fade
Let go and flee my soul
In time and space

   Chorus
   ------

     Lead Break

   Chorus
   ------

Let go dead hand of the dark ages past
Free your grip upon my soul
Light and love wash over me
Once more

   Chorus
